McCoy’s media was originally formulated by McCoy and his colleagues in 1959 by determining the amino acid requirements for the in vitro growth and supporting of Novikoff Hepatoma Cells. McCoy’s 5A Medium was originally based on Basal Medium Eagle but with the addition of an amino acid and vitamin mixture from Medium 199. This modification produced a media identical to RPMI 1629. McCoy’s 5A has been shown to support the growth of primary cultures derived from adrenal glands, bone marrow (normal), gingiva, lung, mouse kidney, omentum, skin, spleen and other tissues. McCoy’s 5A support the indefinite proliferation of Walker 256 carcinoma cells. In addition, it is excellent for the propagation of leukocytes, biopsy tissues, a broad range of human cell types and the most demanding normal or transformed cell lines. It is a general-purpose medium for primary and established cell lines.
