Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside, which is naturally purified from the fungus Micromonospora purpurea.. This antibiotic acts by binding to the 30S subunit of the bacterial ribosome leading to inhibiting protein synthesis. Gentamicin prevents the growth of both Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. In tissue culture, gentamicin solution is used to inhibit the growth of various strains of mycoplasma. The recommended working concentration ranges from 0.5 to 50 µg /mL.
